爱德华米切尔班尼斯特 (1828-1901) was a prominent Black 艺术ist who was born in New Brunswick, 加拿大, and lived in Providence in the last decades of his life. He was the first 艺术ist of color to win a national 艺术 award when he received First Prize at the Centennial Exposition of 1876 in Philadelphia, and he went on to help build Providence into a New England cultural center, becoming a driving force in establishing the Providence Art Club in 1880.

The 班尼斯特社区艺术项目 and 班尼斯特画廊 at Rhode Island College are seeking professional 艺术ists to p艺术icipate in and create new 艺术work for an exhibition that responds to Edward Bannister’s life and 艺术work. We welcome broad interpretations of the theme and a variety of 艺术istic media.

An exhibition in the fall of 2025 will take 的地方 in 班尼斯特画廊 and feature existing 艺术works and at least one new 艺术work from each p艺术icipating 艺术ist. Artists that are selected will receive an honorarium of $1,000. Finalists will be selected by jurors and members of the 班尼斯特社区艺术项目 Exhibition Committee.

• Images should be accompanied by an image list detailing titles, dates, mediums, and dimensions.

• Artists of color, especially those living in the New England region, are highly encouraged to apply.
• Selected finalists should be professional exhibiting 艺术ists from outside the Rhode Island College community. No current faculty from Rhode Island College or full-time students from any college or university will be accepted.
